Eggs have been called the perfect food. They are inexpensive, nutritious, and often times very easy to make.
I have heard people say that you shouldn't cook eggs in a microwave unless you want an egg explosion, but those people either didn't know what they were doing or just heard rumors of exploding eggs and have never attempted to microwave them themselves.
You can make scrambled eggs, over-easy eggs and more in the microwave easily, but what most people don't know is you can also boil eggs in a microwave.
Disclaimer: YOU ABSOLUTELY CAN EXPLODE EGGS IN THE MICROWAVE IF YOU DON'T COOK THEM PROPERLY. IT'S MESSY, AND YOU DON'T WANT THAT SORT OF STRESS IN YOUR LIFE.
Okay, now that that's taken care of, let's dig into how to boil eggs in a microwave properly.
Preparing the Eggs
The first step in successfully boiling eggs in the microwave is to prepare them so they don't explode. DON'T SKIP THIS STEP.
You have two options when it comes to disarming your little egg bombs. The first is to poke tiny holes in the bottom of each egg. This allows for the pressure to be released, which prevents an egg-plosion.
The second (and my preferred option) is to add a half tablespoon of salt PER EGG. If you're going to boil two eggs, that means one full tablespoon of salt. If you're cooking 6, that means three full tablespoons.
After you've disarmed your egg bombs, fill a microwave-safe bowl up with water, making sure that the eggs are completely submerged, with at least a half-inch of water above them.
Cooking The Eggs
The amount of time you need to cook your eggs depends on the strength of your microwave, but I'm going to tell you what I do, which is based on a 1500 watt microwave oven.
The amount of time the eggs spend in the microwave depends on how many you're cooking. The doneness of the eggs depends on how long you keep them in the water afterward.
- For two eggs: Microwave for 4 minutes.
- For four eggs: Microwave for 5 minutes.
- For six eggs: Microwave for 6 minutes.
After cooking, the eggs should be dunked in ice water. Depending on how you want your eggs cooked (soft boiled, medium boiled, or hard boiled eggs), you'll let them sit in the hot water for a set time before the ice bath.
- For soft boiled eggs: Remove the eggs immediately after they're done cooking and put them in the ice bath.
- For medium boiled eggs: Leave them in the hot water for 2 minutes before putting them in the ice bath.
- For hard boiled eggs: Leave them in the hot water for 3 minutes before putting them in the ice bath for a delicious hard boiled egg
Making eggs in the microwave shouldn't be that scary. If you follow instructions, cooking eggs this way can be one of the quickest and healthiest ways to make tasty eggs.
